Reading Between the Lines (Part 2)

Man and woman texting from their bedrooms in a split screen

Mike thought he was done. Phone face down, eating his sandwich in peace. He was about to start episode one of that show everyone kept talking about when his phone buzzed again.

And again.

And again.

He picked it up. The notification on his lock screen made his mouth drop.

Destiny: FUCK …. The only reason we discussed SEX is bc we already know each other..

He unlocked his phone. Read the whole message. All caps. Accusations. The kids’ mother comment. The “you never asked for my phone number” crap. The “I’M A FUCKING LADY” statement. That I want family.

Mike sat there, thumb hovering over the keyboard. His brain was doing that thing where it replays every conversation, trying to figure out where the wires got crossed.

Mike: Sex? When did they discuss sex?

He scrolled up through their messages.

Day one: how you been.

Day two: favorite movies.

Day three: remember we had good sex.

Day four: the companion manifesto.

Mike: Oh shit. That was on third day we texted.

He looked at the message again.

Destiny:We ARE NOT 13 14 and 17 anymore.”

Anymore? ANYMORE?

Miked texted back quickly:

Mike: First of all Destiny how can you say I’m with my kid’s mother because me and you don’t talk on the phone.  I never asked you for your number ok you never asked for mine either and if you wanted me like you said you did you would have been aggressive and what does all that have to do with you being a lady? and how was I keeping you a secret?”

He hit send before he could stop himself.

Then sat there, heart pounding, realizing one thing:

1. He’d called her out on every single point and now she was either gonna cuss him out worse or realize he wasn’t who she thought he was.

His phone stayed quiet.
