"Nympho-WHAT?” | Years Later

Years later, as a college freshman taking Psychology 101, Steve finally learned the definition.

Young man on the phone with his grandma

The memory of that afternoon at the Bijou Theater came to mind and that innocent question. That man's suggestive response to his grandmother, the ripple of laughter throughout the theater.

He called his grandmother that weekend.

"Hey Grandma, remember that time at the movies when I was twelve and I asked if you were a nymphomaniac?"

There was a long pause, and then his grandmother's laughter came through the phone.

"Lord have mercy, Steven. That was the most embarrassing day of my life."

"Sorry about that," Steve said, grinning.

"Don't be sorry. It's a funny memory now."

She paused.

"You know what that fella in front of us said to me afterward?"

"What?"

"He asked me out for coffee! Can you believe the nerve? I told him I was a god-fearing married woman who didn't consort with strange men in movie theaters."

Steve laughed. "Did you ever tell Grandpa about it?"

"Heavens no! Some things are better left unsaid. Now, tell me about your classes..."

As they continue their conversation, Steve smiled at the memory a perfect snapshot of innocence, embarrassment, and the wonderful journey of growing up.
