What Actually Makes Something Alive?
Sounds like a simple question. It isn’t. Viruses blur the line, fire “grows” and “reproduces” in a loose sense, and crystals form patterns too. So biologists lean on seven properties, and something needs most (not necessarily all) of them to count as alive.
1. Order
Living things are organized — cells, tissues, systems, all structured, not random.
2. Regulation
Internal mechanisms that respond to stress and keep things running when the environment gets weird.
3. Growth and Development
Not just getting bigger — developing into a more complex, specific form over time.
4. Energy Processing
Taking in energy (food, sunlight) and converting it into usable work. This is metabolism.
5. Response to the Environment
Reacting to stimuli — light, touch, temperature, threat.
6. Reproduction
Making more of your own kind, passing along genetic information.
7. Homeostasis
Keeping internal conditions stable — temperature, pH, hydration — even when the outside world isn’t.
The Catch
Not every living thing checks every box at every moment. A mule can’t reproduce. A dormant seed isn’t growing. That’s why biologists treat this as a cluster of traits, not a strict checklist — life is the pattern, not any single item on it.
