The Smith family had always lived in the southern state of Mississippi. They were excited about their upcoming Christmas vacation trip to Marin county in California to visit their relatives.
As soon as they arrived, the whole family went to a local church where they were warmly welcomed. The church organized a team to go sing Christmas carol to the elderly in the projects nearby and the family was invited to join. The older family members thought it was an excellent idea for the three cousins way to spread Christmas cheer.
The next day, the three teenage cousins, who thought they were forced, to go to the known Marin City Apartment Complex the projects and sing carols to the elderly. All three was saying this is so lame as they set out early in the morning with their songbooks.
At first, everything seemed great. The six of them sang their hearts out, and the people who heard them, mostly older folks, smiled and sang along. But as they walked deeper into the projects, things started to change. The younger people began slamming their doors and shouting out insults.
Despite all the rejections, the six of them remained undeterred and continued to sing in front of every apartment door they came across. The project’s atmosphere was a bit different as expected compared to what other people were saying what it would be like but they did not let what others say to ruin their experience.
After about two hours of walking from door to door and singing, they eventually made their way back to the church safely where their family and other church members were waiting for them. The elders welcomed them with a round of applause, and even some of the young ones smiled sheepishly. It was evident that they had brought some much-needed Christmas cheer to the the elderly who were alone for the holidays, even some of the people who didn’t welcome them with open arms.
The cousins learned a valuable lesson that day never give up on the less fortunate and the ones who don’t have anyone in these times. They returned home that night with a newfound appreciation for their helping others during the holiday season, as well as the realization that no matter where you are, people can come together during the holiday season.
