Zero Manners: An Unexpected Revelation

Women looking out the window- Zero Manners: An Unexpected Revelation

It was another typical sunny afternoon at May's café when four friends gathered over cups of tea and French macarons. This monthly get-together had become something of a tradition. It was during one such afternoon, that the focus had unexpectedly shifted to Elaine, a graceful yet somewhat reclusive 35-year-old elementary school teacher.

Helen, a florist with an ever-positive vibe, Ruth, dear, you need to get out more! Being with the kids at school doesn’t count. You should really start dating!

That elicited an amused chuckle from Olivia, a peppy and popular wedding planner in town. I know! How about Mr. Colin, our charming Assistant Pastor?

They began Operation: Set-Up. With Assistant Rev. Colin being well-regarded for his spiritual enthusiasm and being a gentleman at all times, the friends agreed that he was the best man for the job.  Their ambitious plan revolved around inviting both Ruth and Rev. Colin to Helen's annual floral fair, but of course, without letting either in on their intentions.

When the day finally came, there was an air of nervous anticipation. Yet, upon meeting, they both immediately clicked. His sharp wit and captivating conversational abilities were something that caught Ruth off-guard, in a delightful way. Rev. Colin, on the other hand, was charmed by Ruth's introverted charisma and sense of humor.

Yet as the evening grew darker, a rather disappointing side of the pastor unveiled itself. Contrary to his polished public persona, he appeared somewhat boorish in private. It began with small signs like his tone of speech gradually changing, then further with a nasty attitude, only to be disrespectful and belittling her profession as 'a job anybody can do.'

Ruth was not the one to suffer silently, though. After some minutes of utter shock, she decided to give Mr. Colin a taste of his own medicine. Thank you for your, ah, insights into my career, Mr. Colin. But last I checked, you is the pastor assistant a go for everything the real pastor asked you to go and get like a maid and you don’t have the basic etiquette requirement for eating at a restaurant. Good night.

As her friends looked on in sheer surprise, a mischievous glint in her eyes, Ruth walked away, leaving a stunned and red-faced assistant pastor behind. While they never tried to set Ruth up again, their monthly get-togethers became livelier than ever, all thanks to this unforgettable adventure.
