It was Grace 30th birthday and decided to go over to her friend’s house for a small gathering. Her boyfriend Derrick had spoken to her all week which was weird, and her best friend Lisa only had a few words to say and it’s wasn’t happy birthday instead telling me to be at Tracy’s by 7 PM sharp.
As Grace walked into Tracy’s place looking around for everyone she walked outside on the patio and a loud outburst of "Surprise!" erupted. She was startled by the sight of her friends and family gathered around a beautifully decorated table. Balloons and streamers covered the walls, and a large "Happy 30th Birthday" banner hung overhead.
The evening was filled with laughter, toasts, and reminiscing. Grace was touched by the effort everyone had made but something was missing.
Her boyfriend Derrick who hasn’t talked to her all week didn’t call or text. As dessert was being served, Derrick showed up with champagne and glasses in hand. He pass everyone a glass and poured them some champagne. Grace and everyone else was confused by what was going on.
Derrick: I would like to have everyone attention please. His voice quivered with nervousness "Grace, I know we're all here to celebrate your birthday, but..."
He paused, reaching into his pocket. The room was silent.
Grace: But….what going on Derrick?
Derrick: "I have another surprise."
Gasps filled the air as Derrick dropped to one knee, presenting a small black suede box. Grace's eyes and mouth were hands wide with shock.
Derrick: "Will you marry me?"
Everyone held their breath while they waited for Grace to answer. Grace, overwhelmed and speechless, tears streaming down her face.
Grace: Yes! Yes! I will.
As the couple hugged, surrounded by the cheers from their loved ones, Lisa leaned over to Grace's sister and whispered, "Well, I guess we're all surprised now."
The birthday party had indeed turned into something much more, catching everyone - especially the birthday girl - completely off guard.
