They say some relationships start with a spark. Well Pepper started with a Lane Bryant’s Push-Up Bra. Maya had taken her bra off and Pepper took her bra and threw against the wall and it hung on a nail perfectly like a family portrait on his bedroom wall as if it was meant to be there.
"That's it," Maya had laughed all that night, pointing at her purple bra hanging from my rusty nail.
Maya: "That's a sign from the universe if we ever saw one."
And just like that, they were together. How they met became a little story that’s popular in their circle – the bra that Cupid himself put on the wall. Everything was going perfect, until her sister Jasmine always showing up because she noticed that Maya was getting close to each other. Jasmine started coming over without invitation and making herself comfortable.
Then she call herself giving me a warning the other day, wagging her finger in my face.
Jasmine: "Don't even think about it Pepper, “NO! NO! NO!” my sister Maya's is too good for you and your games."
It’s when Jasmine tells me “no”. I take that as a "yes”. Two weeks of secret meetups later, Jasmine would either come knocking – or she would stop coming over altogether.
The first time it happened with Maya, I blamed it on to much tequila. The second time, I blamed myself for over thinking too much and stress. By the third time, we both knew something was up – and it….. it’s like it’s got a mind of its own.
Then came the day Maya spoke on it. Well I thought she was instead she went in a different direction. She was standing in the doorway just looking at her purple bra still hanging on my wall, now covered in dust.
Maya: "You know what's funny?" (surprisingly calm).
Pepper: You standing in the doorway looking at that dusty bra.
Maya: "You funny. But I don’t mean to burst your bubble but that bra dusty hanging on the wall it’s not even mine. It for Jasmine. I borrowed it that night when me and her went out to club." (she smirked). "Guess the universe was sending a sign after all – just not the one we thought." GoodBye Pepper.
Pepper: Damn!
Maya turned around and walked out the door and left Pepper sitting there staring at that dusty bra, realizing that sometimes the biggest jokes are the ones we play on ourselves. I swear I could hear Jasmine right now laughing her ass off.
