Abuelo: A Grandfather's Legacy

Abuelo

My grandfather, Ernest, grew up during a time of segregation and racism, but that never stopped him from achieving his dreams and working hard to support his large family.

As a young adult, he took on a difficult and grueling job in the steel factory, working hard for hours on end to provide for his three sons and two daughters. Eventually, he was able to move up and make more money so he could provide better lives for them all.

Years later, after all his children were grown and out on their own, he was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Though Ernest had many joys in life, the best thing he ever did was watching his children and grandchildren grow. Unfortunately, his health eventually started to fail and he had to be moved to a nursing facility.

But that didn't stop Ernest from making a memory. On a Saturday, his children and grandchildren started coming to visit at different times, slowly trickling in to see him. When the oldest grandson arrived with his family and two young great-grandsons that he hadn't seen in a while, it was a tearful moment of joy.

The next day, Ernest peacefully passed away with his entire family around him. Ernest will forever be remembered as a strong and resilient man, who worked hard to provide a life for his family. He left behind a loving and large family to keep his memory alive.
