Once upon a time in the heart of a cozy little town, Grandpa Jack found himself packed off to stay with his son, Tommy, while Grandma Anna ventured to Oakland, California, to visit her brother. Not too fond of change or of leaving his comfy zone, Grandpa hatched a plan to ensure his beloved wife wouldn’t dream of leaving him behind again.
From the moment he arrived at Tommy’s house, Grandpa Jack turned into the most convincing actor, playing the role of a frail, sickly old man. He coughed and groaned, insisting he couldn't possibly lift a finger, let alone his own spirits.
Tommy, concerned for his father, took time off work to cater to Grandpa's every need. However, Grandpa's acting skills didn’t earn him the royal treatment he’d envisioned. Tom, a firm believer in the healing powers of a bland diet, served Grandpa nothing but beans in every conceivable form. Baked beans, boiled red kidney beans, white beans, refried beans – you name it, Grandpa Jack didn’t know what was going on. Tommy told him he had to eat it.
Meanwhile, Grandma Anna, upon hearing of her husband’s sudden illness, caught the first flight back home, worried sick about her husband's health.
The moment Grandpa Jack saw Grandma Anna walk through the door, he leaped out of bed, miraculously cured, and wrapped her in a bear hug. Oh, Anna, don’t you ever leave like that again! It was terrible here, just terrible! All that boy of ours cooked every day was beans, beans, beans! I told him me and your mom didn’t raise you like.
Grandma Anna, unable to hide a smirk, replied, That's exactly what I was going to cook for dinner tonight.
Grandpa's face fell faster than when he dropped his folk on the floor. Oh, take me out now, Doc! he exclaimed, realizing that his cunning plan had backfired spectacularly.
The laughter that filled the room was rich and hearty, and it wasn’t long before Grandpa joined in, despite the prospect of more beans for dinner. From that day forward, Grandpa Jack never faked sickness again – especially if it meant escaping Grandma Anna's bean feasts. Instead, he found joy in the simple moments spent with family, even if it meant a little extra farting here and there. And Grandma? She made sure to mix up the menu, much to Grandpa's relief and delight.
