Turn up the heat

An Open tablet with two blank pages

Tom was having a tough day at work. As a maintenance man he was always busy fixing things around the building. However, today he couldn't seem to concentrate on anything. He had writer's block and his mind was stuck on a blank page. The heat had sweaty and annoyed, so he decided to take a break.

He grabbed his notepad and pen and started to write about the one thing that was occupying his thoughts—the new lady in his life. He had met her a week ago and they hit it off instantly. Her name was Anna, and she was beautiful intelligent, and awesome. Tom couldn't get enough of her.

As he sat outside the building he dialed her number hoping to hear her sweet voice on the other end of the line. She picked up after the third ring and Tom's heart skipped a beat. "Hi Anna, how's your day going?" he asked.

"Im good, Tom. How about you?" she replied.

Tom hesitated for a second. He wasn't sure what to say. He wanted to tell her how much he liked her but didn’t want to come at her the wrong way. "I'm doing good, Anna. I was just thinking about you”.

Anna giggled. "That's sweet, Tom. I was thinking about you too."

They talked for a while about how their day was. Tom found himself opening up to Anna, telling her how he likes to write stories and has writer's block and how frustrated it is. She listened attentively and offered words of encouragement.

After hanging up the phone, it was time for Tom to clock out for the day.  On the way home he couldn’t believe she felt same way about him. Tom made it home and was sitting outside in the shade trying to avoid the scorching heat staring into the distance. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice his cousin Sam approaching him.

"Hey, Tom. What's up?" Sam said, sitting down next to him.

Tom turned to him, smiling. "Nothing much. Just got finished talking to Anna," he said.

Sam raised his eyebrows. "Anna? Who's that?"

Tom smirked. "She is a cool lady I met last week.

Sam nodded. "Sounds like you in love man. But you know what? That's a good thing. You deserve to be happy."

Tom grinned, with chill bumps on his arms. "Thanks, Sam. I appreciate that some positivity."

They sat outside for a while longer talking about life and everything in between. Tom realized that getting up every morning paid off by meeting someone that understood him and encouraged him to keep going.

Writer's block can be the ultimate obstacle for writers. It can creep up when you least expect it and can be incredibly frustrating to deal with. You sit down to write, but your mind is blank and no matter how hard you try the words just won't come out. You feel powerless staring at an empty page or screen. Sometimes it feels like you will never write again just chill writer's block is a temporary roadblock and with the right techniques it can be overcome.
