Ah, it’s that time again the New Year’s resolution - the yearly talk of where you declare to the world (or to yourself in a self written note) your fearless plan of breaking old habits and forging ahead into the life of your dreams. Everyone’s full of energy and enthusiasm for the first week of January, or at least until they step on that digital scale, better yet catch a whiff of the delightful scent of fried bacon that your husband or wife cooking for breakfast can you resist it?
And of course, we all love a bit of the fun family vibes at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. You, after all them weeks of squats, pushups, and almost calling your personal trainer all sorts of kinds of, cuss words that we didn’t know existed, suddenly become the superhero of the holiday feast. Uncle John admiring your toned muscles or Grandma telling you have a trim waist, life can't get any better, right? No.
You think it’s all good, when suddenly, like a mirage in a desert, your eyes spot something sinful, scrumptious, and No! from every calorie-counting app on your phone. There it is, Grandma's infamous, moist, dense, melt in your mouth 7up cake.
Each time your spoon carves a bite out of that towering slice, you could practically hear your trainer saying “you know you done messed up right”. Lose weight, they said. New Year, new you, they said. Well, I’m waving the white flag for Grandma's hypnotic cake.
Next in line is your battle against nicotine. Each moment a sweet testament of victory against that small, deadly white stick, that you swore at 12.01 a.m. on the 1st of January, will never touch your lips again. But soon as the irritating coworker walks in, talking about they not putting up with the messy coworkers and I don’t have to say no names- well, all that goes flying out the window, quite like the promise of no more smoking.
So, yes, we do understand, we sympathize. The truth is, no New Year’s resolution ever accounts for those Achilles heels that we have. Grandma's cake or workplace annoyance. But hey, nobody is perfect, right?
Here's to New Year's resolutions and to us – trying, failing, and laughing all the way through it. Happy New Year!
