Ladies and gentlemen, guests, and fellow citizens,
Today, we the citizens stand before you to address a pressing issue that weighs heavily on our hearts: the escalating violence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our beloved city, known for its vibrant culture and resilient spirit, is grappling with a surge in crime that demands your attention.
Let us dive into the grim realities. According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, in the first three months of 2024, there have been 33 homicides—a number more than tripled what it was during the same quarter in 2023. These are not just statistics; they represent lives lost, families shattered, and communities devastated.
But numbers alone cannot capture the full extent of the crisis. Baton Rouge's crime rate remains alarmingly high, with 70 incidents per 1,000 residents—placing us among the most crime-affected communities in America. The chances of any one of us becoming a victim of violent or property crime stand at a sobering 1 in 14.
As we come the normal that’s the reality now, let us also acknowledge the efforts of our law enforcement agencies. The Baton Rouge Police Department has intensified its proactive policing strategies, making 868 felony arrests in the first quarter of 2024 and seizing 363 firearms. These actions are commendable, but we must remain vigilant and committed to curbing violence.
In addition, new units have been established to tackle gang-related crime. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and the Baton Rouge Police Department collaborate to address violent groups. Their focus includes working with the homicide unit, the School Drug Task Force, and other specialized divisions. Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome's Special Investigations Unit aims to dismantle criminal activities perpetrated by groups and gangs.
However, let us not forget that behind each statistic lies a human story—a grieving family, a shattered dream, and a community yearning for safety. We must come together, not just as law enforcement and policymakers, but as neighbors, friends, and advocates for change.
Our resolve must be unwavering. We must demand justice, invest in community programs, and foster dialogue that bridges divides. Let us honor the memories of those lost by working tirelessly to create a Baton Rouge where safety and hope prevail.
Thank you, and may our collective efforts pave the way for a brighter, safer future for all.
